At least six children are feared dead following two tragic drowning incidents in outer Delhi on Sunday. In Mukhmelpur village, two boys,aged 8 and 10, drowned in a rainwater-filled excavation pit, while four others are presumed to have drowned in the Yamuna River in Alipur.
The first incident occurred near Hiranki Road,where police received a distress call at 6:08 PM. Local residents had already pulled the boys from the pit and rushed them to Satyawadi Raja Harish Chandra (SRHC) Hospital in Narela,but medical staff declared them dead upon arrival. The boys were reportedly playing in agricultural fields behind a house when they fell into the pit, which had been dug to collect excess rainwater from nearby fields.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding incident. officer noted that there were no eyewitnesses to confirm whether the boys accidentally slipped into the pit or entered it intentionally. The excavation,meant for drainage, lacked adequate safety measures,raising concerns about the risks posed to children in the area.
The eight-year-old victim was identified as a resident of Uttarakhand Colony, while the ten-year-old lived in Haiderpur and had been staying with his uncle after death of his father. The bodies have been transferred to mortuary at BJRM Hospital for post-mortem examinations. Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) under Section 106 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita,which pertains to causing death by negligence. Investigators are looking into the responsibilities of those maintaining the excavation site .
In a separate incident later that evening, four minors were reported missing in Yamuna River. The police control room received a call around 7 PM regarding situation. Initial investigations suggest that the children had gone to the river to swim. Divers have been deployed to search for missing boys,but as of now,they have not been located .
These incidents have raised alarms about safety measures in public spaces,particularly in areas where children play . The local community is mourning the loss of the two boys while anxiously awaiting news about the four missing children.
