This week, the Ram temple trust is bracing for its first official gathering amid escalating scrutiny related to concerns over alleged misappropriation of funds. Scheduled discussions will focus on the departures of prominent members, including general secretary Champat Rai and fellow trustee Anil Mishra . Additionally, trust may receive reports on preliminary findings from investigators looking into the situation .
To clarify his involvement, the treasurer of the trust, Govind Dev Giri, emphasized his lack of participation in daily management of donations. He expressed confidence that ongoing audits are well-maintained and available for review by those authorized. Giri called for an unbiased inquiry into the allegations, urging public to trust in the judicial process. “Understanding the full extent of this unfortunate situation is essential,” he noted, reinforcing call for all those responsible to be held accountable. “We stand firmly for the truth,” he insisted.
As investigation advances, authorities have gathered testimonies from various key stakeholders, including Rai,Mishra, and special invitee Gopal Rao. Despite the ongoing inquiry, formal charges against trust members have not yet emerged . The incident has also drawn considerable criticism towards the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its affiliate group, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
On the political front, Uddhav Thackeray, leader of Shiv Sena (UBT),intensified his critique of the BJP during a gathering in Mumbai, launching a campaign dubbed “Ram Raksha.” He condemned the reported misappropriation, declaring,“A thief should not be in charge of investigating his own crime; it necessitates an impartial approach.” He also raised alarms about potential threats to other religious sites, alluding to disquieting slogans that imply a more extensive agenda beyond Ayodhya.
In pointed critique, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge accused BJP and RSS of orchestrating a significant financial exploitation concerning the Ram Temple donations. In defense,BJP chief Nitin Nabin countered these allegations, stating that critics of the party have historically disregarded Hindu values. “We will address any lapses and take corrective measures as needed,” Nabin stated in Lucknow, dismissing opposition claims as efforts to undermine Hindu faith and expressing confidence in strength of the Hindu community.
In related developments, Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) has formally requested an investigation by the local police into the assertions made by opposition leaders, including Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal. In a communication dated July 4, VHP international president Alok Kumar called for these individuals to be summoned to validate their allegations concerning temple donations . The VHP cautioned that should these claims prove unfounded, legal action should be considered against the accusers for inciting discord.
The unfolding situation surrounding Ram Temple donations represents a critical challenge for the trust and the broader Sangh Parivar, with the potential ramifications of investigation likely to extend well beyond Ayodhya.
