Survivor's Story
On June 24, Hernan Gil,43-year-old security guard, faced life-altering moment on duty in basement of building in Venezuela. Day began like any other until he felt initial tremor,which he described as brief. But second quake hit hard,leaving him frozen with fear inside his guard booth.
In recent interview from hospital bed, Gil recounted chaos that followed. He heard neighbor in parking area shout it was earthquake,just before structure around him started to collapse. “Everything collapsed,” he said,as debris rained down,hitting him on head and eye.
Gil's ordeal lasted agonizing eight days,trapped beneath rubble of building. His story a beacon of hope for many in Venezuela, country grappling with aftermath of devastating double earthquake that rocked its northern region. And as rescue operations unfolded,his story showed human resilience in disaster's face.
