Activists from Rythu Swarajya Vedika (RSV) and Human Rights Forum (HRF) slammed government for inaction on families of farmers reportedly taking own lives in ongoing agrarian crisis in Anantapur district. Around 150 farmers have died by suicide since 2024 began, they say. Yet no family has received promised ₹7 lakh compensation .
RSV and HRF reps visited 18 families across villages June 27,28. They found that while some families got visits from mandal-level committee,no follow-up from Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) happened. Grieving families remain without needed financial support.
2019,a Village Revenue Officer must visit family on suicide day. Preliminary report should go to Divisional Level Committee within 24 hours — this committee verifies info, recommends compensation within week. But HRF and RSV noted that though some suicides verified by mandal-level committees as farming-related,steps beyond that were skipped.
Deceased farmers grew high-risk crops like cotton, chilli, tomato, groundnut on small plots. Faced water scarcity, borewell failures, rising temps, high input costs, pest infestations. These pressures have driven them to brink .
Activists urged government to tackle Anantapur's agrarian crisis, ensure Divisional Level Committee acts quickly. They stressed need for immediate help to affected families. Government can't look away from their plight…
