Actor-director Riteish Deshmukh responded to backlash over what he wore at celebration for his film,Raja Shivaji. Event intended to thank cast and crew drew criticism after a video showed him in a T-shirt with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's image.
Deshmukh clarified in a statement that it was a private gathering,celebrating film's success with audiences. He emphasized his respect for Shivaji Maharaj,saying,“As a follower of Shivaji Maharaj (Shivpremi) and a family member to the audience,I consider it my duty to offer a clarification regarding this.”
The actor explained that choosing that outfit wasn't intentional,blaming a hectic promotional schedule. “I wish to clarify humbly that behind celebrating while wearing t-shirt featuring the image of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, I did not intend to disrespect him,” he noted. He came straight from promotional activities,without chance to change.
Deshmukh also addressed claims he drank alcohol during event . He firmly denied these,asserting,“I have never consumed alcohol to date,nor will I ever do so in the future.” He noted video was recorded by an uninvited guest,questioning its credibility .
Deshmukh expressed regret for any unintended offense,stating, “Nevertheless,if anyone's sentiments were hurt due to my actions,then as a follower of Shivaji Maharaj,I express my heartfelt regrets.” His respect for Shivaji Maharaj remains strong . “Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is symbol of faith,inspiration, and self-respect for all of us,” he said,reaffirming his loyalty .
Despite controversy,Deshmukh's film has hit new heights. Raja Shivaji,which he directed and starred in,is now highest-grossing Marathi film ever,surpassing ₹117.41 crore globally. It earned ₹113.14 crore at Indian box office and ₹4.27 crore internationally. With 91,858 shows,it amassed ₹95.86 crore net.
Deshmukh closed by reiterating his deep connection to Shivaji Maharaj,stating, “I hold immense respect, love,and loyalty for him in my heart . This sentiment is just as strong today and will remain so forever. Jai Shivray 🙏 Yours,Riteish Vilasrao Deshmukh.” But will this quell the uproar…?
