Marvel Studios just dropped a bombshell: Ryan Gosling is new Ghost Rider. The news came at Comic-Con's Hall H in San Diego on Saturday when Kevin Feige announced Gosling will play Johnny Blaze in a film set for 2028 .
The crowd went wild. A motorcycle engine roared through the hall,setting off cheers. Gosling took the stage, saying he's wanted this role for years and only one director could make it happen: Shawn Levy. Levy, joining Gosling on stage,confirmed he's directing.
Levy's no stranger to Marvel hits, having directed Deadpool and Wolverine back in 2024 . The idea for Ghost Rider came up while he and Gosling were working on Star Wars: Starfighter, set to release May 28,2027 . They brainstormed ideas, leading to Levy's enthusiastic pitch.
This is Gosling's first superhero gig. He's riding high off Project Hail Mary,a box office smash in India . As its run winds down,it's hitting milestones few Hollywood films reach there.
Ghost Rider first appeared in 1972's Marvel Spotlight No. 5, created by Gary Friedrich and Mike Ploog. Johnny Blaze, the stunt rider turned fiery avenger,was previously played by Nicolas Cage in two films that grossed over $361 million.
Though Cage's films were Sony's,rights returned to Marvel. A different Ghost Rider, played by Gabriel Luna,appeared on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D . but wasn't part of main Marvel Cinematic Universe. A planned Hulu series with Luna was canceled in 2019, leaving fans wanting more.
Gosling's been eyeing Ghost Rider for years . In 2022, he expressed interest while denying other Marvel roles. Feige had hinted at finding a spot for him in the MCU. Earlier this year, Gosling admitted on podcast that talks were ongoing, though tricky.
