New research has cracked open mystery about Old Masters like Leonardo da Vinci, Sandro Botticelli, and Rembrandt. Turns out,they might've been adding egg yolk to their oil paints on purpose. Study published in Nature Communications reveals this trick,showcasing technical prowess from the 16th to early 18th centuries.
People used to think protein traces in old oil paintings were just contamination. But new findings suggest these proteins were added to boost paint quality. Ophélie Ranquet from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology noted how even tiny yolk amounts change paint properties dramatically. "Our results show that even with a very small amount of egg yolk, you can achieve an amazing change of properties in the oil paint," she said.
Oil paint,popularized in the Renaissance, gives vibrant colors and more work time than ancient Egyptian tempera,which mixed yolk with pigments and water. But oil paint has its issues — darkening and light damage. These artists,familiar with tempera,may have used yolk in oil paint to tackle these problems .
Researchers recreated old paint-making methods,using egg yolk,distilled water,linseed oil,and pigments like lead white and ultramarine blue. Ranquet explained yolk's impact: it makes paint more humidity and oxidation-resistant thanks to its antioxidants. "For example,the lead white pigment is quite sensitive to humidity, but if you coat it with a protein layer,it makes it a lot more resistant to it," she said.
One painting examined was da Vinci’s “Madonna of the Carnation” at Munich's Alte Pinakothek. Faces there show wrinkling, likely from oil paint drying. Ranquet said yolk can reduce this wrinkling, changing paint properties without adding more pigment. "That’s quite amazing because you have the same quantity of pigment in your paint,but the presence of the egg yolk changes everything," she noted.
Botticelli’s “The Lamentation Over the Dead Christ,” also at the Alte Pinakothek, was another key piece. Mainly tempera, its background has oil paint. Study found proteins there,possibly overlooked as contamination. But yolk's benefits suggest it was a deliberate addition.
Ranquet hopes these insights will stir more interest in Old Masters' techniques, field with little scientific exploration. Maria Perla Colombini,analytical chemistry professor at the University of Pisa, praised this innovative study . "This exciting paper provides a new scenario for the understanding of old painting techniques," she said,noting it shows how artists achieved stunning effects with simple materials .
