At least seven dead,many hurt after a landslip hit Mumbai's Ghatkopar area early Wednesday morning. Heavy rain triggered the slide at 3:48 a.m. at Gaushiya Chawl in Chirag Nagar. Rescue crews rushed in,searching for one person still trapped in rubble.
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) called it a Level-II incident — serious, needing major resources . Soil and debris crashed down a hillside, smashing into two or three houses. Residents jolted awake by noise.
Shaira Bhanu's home got hit by a falling tree. Her child trapped under water tank. "We quickly removed the water tank, then ran out," she said. "If they had worked faster, more lives could've been saved." Mohammed Aman described the chaos: "Heard the noise,didn't think,just ran."
BMC Mayor Ritu Tawde visited the site, overseeing rescue efforts. Announced ₹4 lakh compensation for families of deceased,₹50,000 for injured. "Authorities made every effort to rescue those trapped," she stated.
Rescues started soon after the landslip,police arrived by 4 a.m. Locals helped evacuate nearby residents. Fire brigade teams,including two divisional fire officers,an assistant divisional officer,fire engines,and rescue vehicles,on scene.
Even with quick response,one person still trapped under debris,said Deputy Chief Fire Brigade officer K.R. Yadav. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) joined in. Around 50 BMC workers involved. Tawde noted tough conditions,narrow paths slowed rescue teams.
All seven deceased taken to Rajawadi Hospital. Chief Medical Officer Vishal confirmed deaths . Victims included a family of four recently moved from Uttar Pradesh. Names: Mohamad Samir Ansari (14),Sahil Husen Abdul Kazi (19),unknown man (45),Aban Arif Shaikh (2),Manat Arif Shaikh (4), Marjina Arif Shaikh (27), Viket Ramesh Yadav (27).
Three treated for injuries at Rajawadi, four at Kurla Bhabha Hospital . Injured: Farana Dilber Khan (28), Dilber Amnulla Khan (38), Shamin Muslim Khan (26). At Kurla Bhabha: Sohel Ansari (18) with head injury,Mohamad Ansari (14),Naimuddhin Eqbal Khan (28), Sajid Ansari (16).
BMC had warned about landslip risks,told residents to evacuate. Sandhya Doshi, BMC corporator, stressed homeowners' responsibility. "Priority is clear path for rescue," she said .
Local politician Guru Prasad Gupta urged government action to relocate high-risk residents. "Conduct survey,find, shift them to avoid future incidents," he said .
Residents worried about home stability. Sheikh Shahid noted some houses leaning dangerously. "If rain continues,I might have to move before another landslip hits," he said.
Elsewhere in Mumbai's Sion East, a structure collapsed later in day, trapping five. Rescued after an hour,taken to Sion Hospital.
