Leadership of Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA) stepped down after a stormy meeting filled with accusations and infighting. Shweta Menon, head of 17-member executive committee, quit Sunday,June 21, 2026 . She cited efforts to oust her as reason.
Resignation followed a no-confidence motion against Menon’s team. Critics said leadership ignored daily operations and unresolved disputes. Tensions rose when members questioned the annual report and financials presented by general secretary Kukku Parameswaran. Unni Shivpal, treasurer on leave over harassment complaint, wouldn't take responsibility for finances.
Key AMMA figures like former leaders Sidhique, Edavela Babu, and Baburaj raised concerns over financial discrepancies. Menon asked for 45 days to address issues, but her plea was shot down, fueling more discord.
“I have also come to believe, as some women stated earlier, there is an attempt to push the association into hands of some accused individuals,” Menon said, voicing frustration with internal power plays.
Baburaj countered Menon’s claims, arguing outgoing committee used women's issues as a smokescreen while ignoring female members' real problems . This exchange laid bare AMMA's deep rifts .
After leadership's exit, general body quickly formed an ad-hoc committee to run things until new elections. Ramesh Pisharody, actor and MLA from Palakkad, was named convenor. Other members: K.B. Ganesh Kumar,Suresh Krishna,Sadique,Rony David, Krishnaprabha, Asha Aravind,Shajohn,Devi Chandana.
Meeting opened by actor Mohanlal, who stressed unity, warning against disputes weakening the group. Yet, big names like Mammootty,Suresh Gopi, Prithviraj,Tovino Thomas were no-shows.
Menon’s team took office August 2025 after Mohanlal's leadership quit amid Hema Committee report controversies . Outgoing committee included general secretary Kukku Parameswaran, vice presidents Jayan R and Lakshmipriya, treasurer Unni Shivpal.
