HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana University is shaking things up with new leadership for three departments: Music and Performing Arts,Visual Arts and Design, and Communication and Media Studies. These moves aim to boost academics and deepen community ties .
Dr. Paul Buyer takes charge of Music and Performing Arts,leaving Clemson University where he was percussion director and acting associate dean. Buyer's got a Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music in percussion from University of Arizona, plus a Bachelor's in music education from Ball State. He's also a known speaker and author in music education.
“Dr. Paul Buyer joins us at time of incredible trajectory, bringing a distinguished record of leadership from Clemson University,” said Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Eric Skipper.
Buyer's expected to elevate the department,focusing on community engagement and partnerships with schools and arts groups . He's earned accolades like Percussive Arts Society’s Outstanding Service Award.
Over in Visual Arts and Design, Michael Eble steps in from University of Louisiana at Lafayette, where he was assistant dean of the College of Arts. Eble has Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting from UL Lafayette and a Master of Fine Arts from University of Mississippi. His work delves into abstract topography and architecture, with exhibitions nationwide .
“Professor Michael Eble is a multi-faceted leader whose extensive experience spans administrative excellence,gallery curation and community advocacy,” Skipper noted.
Eble's leadership is set to enrich the curriculum, fostering an environment ripe for student growth and artistic exploration . He's held key roles at University of Minnesota Morris as department head and gallery curator.
Dr. Caroline E. Sawyer will lead Communication and Media Studies, coming from University of South Carolina Beaufort. Emmy-nominated producer, Sawyer specializes in broadcast production and community storytelling. She's got a doctorate in communication from University of Memphis and has secured nearly $1 million in project grants .
“Dr. Caroline Sawyer brings a phenomenal wealth of experience to the Department of Communication and Media Studies and Robin Roberts Center for Broadcast Media,” Skipper remarked .
Her student-focused approach has involved students as co-producers on national TV programs,boosting their real-world media experience. Sawyer's strategies are expected to significantly benefit the department and its students .
These appointments show Southeastern Louisiana University's commitment to boosting academic programs and fostering a vibrant arts community. Each leader brings experience and vision to drive their departments forward .
