South Africa clawed back a 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic at World Cup on Thursday . Teboho Mokoena nailed a penalty seven minutes from time,pulling even after team went down early.
Czechs struck first in sixth minute, Michal Sadilek finishing off a pass from Alexandr Sojka,who got it from Adam Hlozek's cross. South Africa, staring at early exit, found lifeline when Pavel Sulc was hit with a handball,letting Mokoena net country's first World Cup goal in 16 years.
Both squads came off lackluster openers, chasing lost momentum. Czechs,with Patrik Schick leading, blew early chance when Schick's header went wide right at start . They regrouped fast, Sadilek's goal giving them control.
But Czechs couldn't press advantage. Vladimir Darida held back on a prime chance in second half,and Lukas Cerv’s long shot got stopped by South African keeper Ronwen Williams. Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta saw many empty seats, though crowd mostly backed South Africa.
Tension spiked near end. Thapelo Maseko's shot hit Sulc's arm, referee Tori Penso gave penalty. Mokoena's shot not only tied it, but also reignited South Africa's tournament dreams .
Afterward,South Africa's coach,Hugo Broos, praised his team's grit. He stressed keeping same spirit for next match against South Korea . “If we play with same mentality,it will be possible,” he said,eyeing hurdles ahead.
Czech coach Miroslav Koubek lauded his players' effort,saying he couldn't fault them. “They gave it absolutely everything, and sometimes that might be more than a victory,” he reflected, noting team's resolve despite draw.
