In a wild finish at FIFA World Cup 2026,Stephen Eustaquio scored last-second goal,launching Canada into knockout stage for first time ever. Match against South Africa ended 1-0 Sunday at Los Angeles Stadium,Eustaquio's strike in stoppage time sent Canadian team into a frenzy.
From Leamington,Ontario,born to Portuguese parents,Eustaquio started football at age four . Early days spent with local clubs before family moved to Portugal. There,he sharpened skills,eventually signing with Leixoes in 2017. Career took off at GD Chaves in 2018, then to Mexico with Cruz Azul. After loan to Pacos de Ferreira, he made European debut in 2020,scoring in UEFA Europa Conference League match.
By January 2022,Eustaquio joined Primeira Liga on loan to Porto,who later secured his permanent transfer. Latest move took him to Los Angeles FC February 2026,currently on loan.
Tragedy hit Eustaquio family in 2023 when his mother, Esmeralda,died of brain cancer. Year later,his father passed from heart attack. Losses deeply impacted Eustaquio, who now has a daughter,Benedita,with girlfriend Constanta. In emotional post-match interview,he said his drive comes from family . “Everything I do is for my family,for my parents, for my girlfriend,for my daughter, for my brother,for my friends back home – for all of them,” he shared.
His brother,Mauro Eustaquio, coaching Inter Toronto FC, talked about coping with grief. They chose to honor parents' legacy through football. “Our parents… they gave us wings. So now it’s up to us to fly,” Mauro said.
Internationally,Eustaquio has played for Canada since youth,in 2012 AGS Cup. Briefly considered Portuguese U-21 team but committed to Canada February 2019. Senior debut came later,he's since played in major tournaments, including 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup and 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
After South Africa match,Eustaquio talked about team’s effort and resolve. “We worked lot to get this victory. We really want to give this win to all Canadians,” he said. As stand-in captain,he stressed team effort behind his goal. “It was an amazing goal, but when I shot, I felt everybody shot with me. Everybody put a little bit of power on it,and it went into the back of the net,” he noted, marking sixth goal in 61 appearances for Canada.
