Cheng Li-wun,head of Taiwan’s main opposition party, the Kuomintang (KMT),landed in the United States late Monday for two-week visit that Beijing,Taipei, and Washington will keep an eye on. It’s her first trip to the U.S . in nearly two years, coming after her talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in April about Taiwan and reunification .
While in the U.S.,Cheng plans to connect with the Taiwanese-American community and engage with think tanks in places like San Francisco,Boston, and New York. She’ll mainly focus on discussions with policymakers and analysts in Washington. The KMT hasn’t revealed specifics about her meetings.
Expect attention on this visit, especially after Xi urged more patience and dialogue regarding Taiwan’s future. Not long after their last meeting, Beijing launched initiatives to increase interactions with Taiwan,a move many see as an effort to enhance Cheng's political profile .
Cheng's diplomatic style contrasts sharply with the ruling Democratic Progressive Party, which emphasizes Taiwan’s sovereignty. She’ll need to clearly outline her vision for Taiwan-China relations. Navigating these political waters won’t be simple. The international landscape is tricky right now.
