Seventeen-year-old Tanvi Sharma made waves Sunday, clinching her first BWF World Tour Super 300 title at the Taipei Open. She became the event's youngest champion ever,beating Vietnam's sixth seed Nguyen Thuy Linh 21-16,21-16 in the final .
This win is big moment for Indian badminton. Tanvi's only second Indian woman to take Taipei Open, joining Saina Nehwal,who won in 2008. It also ends a 17-year title drought for India here; last win was by the mixed doubles team of Jwala Gutta and V Diju in 2009.
Throughout the final, Tanvi showed her mettle. She stormed to a 10-2 lead in the first game. Nguyen tried to catch up, reaching 10-8,but Tanvi held her ground to win 21-16. In the second game,after falling behind 0-3, she turned it around fast, extending her lead with sharp cross-court shots and placements, wrapping up the match in 36 minutes.
With this title, Tanvi joins an elite group of Indian women’s singles players who have won Super 300 or higher-level titles,like Nehwal,PV Sindhu,and Devika Sihag. At 17 years and 222 days,she's also the youngest finalist ever here, breaking the previous record held by Korean doubles player Lee Yong Dae.
Reflecting on win,Tanvi said, "I'm really happy to win this title. Going step by step and match by match, I just wanted to give my best here and felt I played really well throughout the tournament. I was quite nervous, but I told myself to give 100 percent and stick to my game." This victory comes just over a year after she was runner-up at US Open,marking her second BWF World Tour title match.
