A national task force has advocated for a phased transition to post-quantum cryptography (PQC) across India's most critical sectors, signaling an urgent need to future-proof the nation's digital defenses. This recommendation stems from concerns that advanced quantum computers, once fully developed, will inevitably render current encryption methods obsolete, leaving sensitive national data vulnerable.
The panel, convened by India's principal scientific and technological agency, has identified specific domains requiring this cryptographic overhaul. These encompass public administration, defense systems, national power grids, telecommunication networks, transport infrastructure, and the financial services industry. The proposed shift to PQC is considered vital for securing long-term data integrity against the emerging quantum threat.
Current cryptographic protocols, which presently safeguard invaluable information, are projected to eventually succumb to the immense processing power of quantum machines. Therefore, the task force's findings underscore the imperative for a proactive move to PQC, ensuring continued protection of the country's most sensitive digital assets.
