Teejan Bai, a giant in world of Pandavani, has died. Her journey from Chhattisgarh's villages to global stages defied all expectations. She broke barriers, challenging norms and redefining women's roles in arts.
Born into a conservative family,Teejan faced resistance from the start. Her parents were against her learning Pandavani, an ancient folk tradition from the Mahabharata . "Believe it or not,I was beaten by my parents when I first expressed a desire to learn Pandavani," she once said, recalling her early struggles . But her maternal grandfather saw her potential and secretly supported her passion.
Married at 12, Teejan refused to let her circumstances hold her back. By 13, she was performing in public, despite facing social isolation. After leaving abusive marriage, she lived alone in a hut, sustaining herself through her art. "When the whole world, including my near and dear ones, turned hostile, I took refuge in Pandavani," she said, underscoring her dedication.
Her performances, whether in village squares or urban venues, mesmerized audiences . Teejan's choice of the Kapalik style — intense and demanding — distinguished her from the traditional Vedamati approach. "Since they had labelled me a rebel, I thought, why not prove it in every way," she quipped, determined to break molds .
Throughout her career,Teejan Bai championed Pandavani, engaging in initiatives like SPIC MACAY to bring folk traditions into schools and colleges. Theatre legend Habib Tanvir saw her potential to shift perceptions of folk art.
Pandavani, with its dramatic tales and music, relies on the lead performer to embody characters. Teejan's shows were known for her voice modulation and dynamic storytelling, using her ektara to enhance her narratives.
She often portrayed Draupadi, a character she found inspiring. Through impromptu verses, she drew strength from Draupadi's resilience. "I think characters like her are there in the epic to inspire women like me," she said, reflecting on her deep connection to the stories.
From earning ₹10 for her first show to receiving Padma Vibhushan, Teejan Bai's story is one of perseverance and self-belief. She brought Pandavani from the rural heart of Chhattisgarh to the world stage, ensuring its vibrancy. Her legacy will inspire future artists and storytellers.
