Food prices in Hyderabad are soaring, fueled by climbing costs of key ingredients and fuel. Telangana now has India's highest inflation rate at 6.32%, leaving consumers struggling with rising costs.
At Panchakattu Dosa, a popular eatery, a notice warns diners of steep menu price hikes. Gas prices have shot up 85%,while urad dal and rice jumped 17% and 10%. The notice bluntly states,“Due to increased costs of all the raw materials in last six months, we have no choice but to increase our prices.”
Over at Kakatiya Deluxe Mess, the price of all-you-can-eat thali has climbed from ₹200 to ₹250,a 25% rise since January. This reflects broader food inflation trends in the city, worsened by Middle East geopolitical tensions.
Small eateries feel the squeeze too. Many hiked prices by up to 20% in six months. A food kiosk owner in Ameerpet lamented, “How can I reduce price? The government has executed only one price drop while it hiked multiple prices, like taking price of commercial cylinder above ₹3,000 mark.” That's way up from ₹1,742 at year's start.
Now,a commercial 19 kg LPG cylinder in Hyderabad costs ₹2,985, even after a ₹209 reduction in early August. These gas price hikes hit small and medium food businesses hard, often relying on private suppliers who add their own fees.
As food costs climb, students and budget-minded consumers are squeezed. One student prepping for the Telangana Group-1 exam in S.R. Nagar said grocery price surge has many turning to cheap, ready-to-eat meals like cup noodles over home-cooked meals. “It makes it really difficult for those with student-sized pocket money to not only go out, but even to eat at home,” they observed.
Price hikes reach beyond food. National inflation based on the All India Consumer Price Index (CPI) is 4.45% for July 2026 versus July 2025. The Consumer Food Price Index shows 5.52% rise over the same period.
Hyderabad's woes are compounded by ongoing conflicts involving Israel, the U.S., and Iran, disrupting supply chains and pushing costs higher . As inflation tightens its grip, many residents wonder how they'll manage food budgets in months ahead.
Prices are climbing everywhere—from mall restaurants to street food stalls—the economic strain is evident . These price changes highlight a bigger challenge for consumers and businesses alike, navigating a volatile market .
