President Donald Trump announced plans to withdraw from his leadership role at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts following a federal court ruling that barred him from having his name on the building . The decision, made by Judge Christopher Cooper, came after a lawsuit from US Representative Joyce Beatty, a trustee of the Kennedy Center, who sought to halt Trump's proposed closure of the facility.
In a lengthy post on Friday, Trump criticized Judge Cooper, labeling him reckless and claiming that the judge, along with the "Radical Left," would rather see the arts center fail than allow him to revitalize it . He referred to himself in the third person, asserting that only he could restore the center to its former glory.
The Kennedy Center,a national landmark in Washington, D.C., was established shortly after President Kennedy's assassination in 1963,with the intention of serving as a living memorial to him. Trump's controversial involvement began soon after his inauguration in February 2025,when he replaced members of the center's bipartisan board with his own appointees and dismissed long-serving president, Deborah Rutter. He was subsequently elected as chair of the board.
In December, the board voted to rename the building “The Donald J. Trump and the John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts.” This decision faced immediate backlash, with critics arguing it violated 1964 law that designated the center's name. Amid mounting public pressure and performer cancellations, Trump announced plans to close the center for renovations starting in July.
Judge Cooper's ruling mandated that Trump’s name be removed from all signage and materials associated with the Kennedy Center within 14 days. He emphasized that center's name is protected by law and can only be changed by Congress, not the board's unilateral decision. Cooper's ruling also reinstated voting rights for trustees like Beatty, which Trump’s board had previously stripped away.
Cooper's 94-page decision pointed out inconsistencies in the Trump administration's claims regarding the center's safety. He noted that prior to planned closure, officials had touted the center as a premier venue for upcoming events, contradicting assertions that it was hazardous. judge concluded that while the board has the authority to close center, it likely failed to act prudently in doing so .
In response to the ruling,Trump vowed to transfer oversight of the Kennedy Center back to Congress, criticizing Cooper as a partisan figure who treated him unfairly. He expressed frustration over situation, stating that he could not be involved in an institution where public safety was compromised.
Beatty welcomed court's decision as a victory for the rule of law, asserting that Kennedy Center belongs to the American people, not to Trump. She condemned his actions as desecration of a sacred memorial for personal vanity, expressing pride in her fight to protect institution.
