Jalalabad, Shahjahanpur district's town, will soon be called ‘Parshurampuri’ after Uttar Pradesh Government's decision in a Cabinet meeting Monday,July 6, 2026. Renaming nods to town's history as Bhagwan Parshuram's birthplace, a central figure in mythological texts.
Finance Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna confirmed Cabinet's green light, saying administrative and legal steps will kick off to make it official. This involves updating government records, official documents with new name. “The proposal placed before Cabinet sought renaming of town of Jalalabad as ‘Parshurampuri’. Council of Ministers has approved proposal,” Khanna stated .
Decision follows local leaders and residents pushing hard, highlighting town's cultural, religious weight. An official government statement mentioned name change cleared by Government of India.
But timing's sparked criticism . Ajay Rai,U.P . Congress president, accused ruling BJP of using renaming to distract from other issues, pointing to Ram Temple controversies. “This is a calculated decision by BJP in an election year, but it will not help them,” Rai said . But will it sway voters…?
