Push for private role in Kerala's critical minerals sector kicked off back when Left Democratic Front (LDF) was in charge. Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan and Industries Minister P.K. Kunhalikutty told Assembly State-run Kerala Minerals and Metals Ltd (KMML) began planning monazite ‘cracking’ earlier this year while LDF held power.
At 265th KMML board meeting, January 20, global e-tenders went out after expression of interest. Board, with state government reps, got three bids. One came from Hyderabad-based company. By 267th board meeting,February 25,decision made to award work order to this firm,Satheesan said. “This was for private participation in mineral sector,” he noted, stressing his Revised Budget doesn't mention privatization plans.
Kunhalikutty added KMML didn't finalize memorandum with Hyderabad firm due to Assembly elections. He hinted UDF government wary of pushing proposal, fearing political backlash. UDF's comments happen as LDF accuses them of privatization in Revised Budget, which includes rare earth and critical minerals corridor plans.
Besides privatization talk,Satheesan announced major tax drive to tackle revenue leakage and catch tax defaulters. Assured Assembly strict actions await tax evaders. Government aims to start rolling out Budget announcements in three months, showing active governance stance.
LDF didn't respond to UDF's claims in Assembly session, leaving political scene around privatization and mineral sector tense, unresolved. What's next?…
