HPV vaccine has hit major milestone in UK,slashing cervical cancer death risk before age 30 to almost nothing . New study in The Lancet shows that from 2020 to 2024,no women aged 20 to 24 in UK died from cervical cancer. Contrast that with expected 23 deaths without vaccine.
Study led by Queen Mary University of London, backed by Cancer Research UK. Findings show steep drop in cervical cancer deaths among young women. From 2000 to 2004, 25 women in this age group died. That number fell to just five from 2015 to 2019. Michelle Mitchell of Cancer Research UK called it big leap in cancer fight, stressing vaccine's life-saving impact.
HPV,common sexually transmitted infection, linked to many cancers, especially cervical. WHO says HPV causes over 660,000 cervical cancer cases yearly, making it fourth most common cancer in women worldwide. In 2022, cervical cancer led to about 350,000 deaths globally, mostly in poorer countries.
High-risk HPV strains can cause abnormal cells, raising cancer risk. UK began routine teen vaccinations in 2008 for both girls and boys. Vaccination is top preventive measure against high-risk HPV,as no treatment eradicates virus .
Countries with highest cervical cancer death rates include India, China,Indonesia. In 2022,India reported 79,906 deaths,China 55,694,Indonesia 20,708. In response, countries launched HPV vaccination drives. India started free campaign for 11.5 million girls aged 14 in February 2024,using US-made Gardasil . China added HPV vaccine to national immunization program in October 2025,offering free doses to girls.
Despite progress,HPV vaccine programs face issues, especially hesitancy. In conservative societies, seeing HPV as STD can block acceptance. Misinformation, conspiracy theories about vaccine's safety, like false links to infertility, complicate raising vaccination rates.
In Pakistan,HPV vaccination efforts lag, partly due to distrust from a CIA operation misusing vaccine program in 2010. WHO says HPV kills eight women daily in Pakistan, highlighting urgent need for better vaccination strategies…
