Ukraine's ambassador to the United Nations, Sergiy Melnyk,is pushing for ten times more air defense support from Western allies as Russian airstrikes ramp up against Ukrainian cities. At a UN Security Council meeting,Melnyk stressed the urgent need to protect civilians as Russian attacks grow in intensity.
"Russia's aerial terror is on a new scale. We need a response that matches it," he said, calling on European and American partners to significantly increase military aid. His comments come as Ukraine endures heavier bombardments that endanger its civilian population.
Along with the call for more military support, Melnyk urged all UN member states to take strict unilateral actions to undermine Russia's financial resources. He warned that any gaps in sanctions or unpunished aggression only empower Russia to keep attacking.
“Just do it,” Melnyk urged, demanding an immediate ceasefire and the release of all prisoners of war and unlawfully detained civilians in an "all for all" exchange .
Melnyk also pointed to changing dynamics on the battlefield, claiming Ukraine's targeted strikes at legitimate military targets are hurting Russia's ability to maintain its military efforts. He believes this strategy is starting to show real results in conflict.
His remarks reflect a rising urgency among Ukrainian officials as they deal with the ongoing war, which has seen a sharp rise in violence. The call for better air defense capabilities highlights the dire situation in Ukraine, where civilian safety is a top priority amid constant attacks.
As the fighting drags on,how the international community responds will be vital. Melnyk's push for a significant boost in support and tougher sanctions against Russia aims to galvanize global action to defend Ukraine's sovereignty and protect its people.
