Venezuela struck a deal with General Electric on Monday to breathe life into its faltering electricity grid. Interim president Delcy Rodríguez announced it during a televised event at presidential palace. Marks a shift in Venezuela’s stance on foreign investment, especially from U.S.
Rodríguez, who took over after Nicolás Maduro was ousted in January, called it "a historic step for Venezuela." The partnership with General Electric Vernova, its local branch, aims to restore power service for a nation hit by outages lasting 10 hours or more.
Venezuela's power system, nationalized in 2007 under Hugo Chávez, has been neglected for years. Critics say Rodríguez may be loosening state grip on economy, but major institutions still under her party's thumb. Energy crisis worsened by maintenance failures, high consumption. Analysts say it stalls economic recovery.
Deal with General Electric came through Rolando Alcalá,the new Energy Minister. electrical engineer,Alcalá seen as breath of fresh air after six years of military oversight. Rodríguez's team also open to engaging with Trump administration on issues like recent military strikes on criminal gangs .
Last week,U.S. forces took out leader of Tren de Aragua gang. U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said it was done "in full cooperation with Venezuelan security forces." Such collaboration unthinkable during Maduro's rule.
Opposition voices in Venezuela still skeptical. They argue no real changes in legislative, executive, judicial branches post-Maduro . Electoral council still packed with Maduro loyalists, casting doubt on future elections' legitimacy.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stressed need for free, fair elections in Venezuela. Said it's crucial for attracting much-needed investment . Highlighted importance of democratic conditions, like free press and political organizing.
As Venezuela steps into this new era with General Electric, the road to power grid restoration and economic stability remains rocky. Can interim government manage these hurdles? That’s the question…
