In a landmark development for women's education in India,Shri Vishnu Engineering College for Women has transitioned into Vishnu Women’s University,marking its status as Andhra Pradesh’s first private women’s university . The institution, located in Bhimavaram,commenced operations for the academic year 2026-27, building on a legacy that began 25 years ago with just three undergraduate programs and 180 students.
Initially focused on providing quality technical education to women, particularly from rural backgrounds, the college has significantly broadened its scope. Over the years, it has expanded from three programs to nine B.Tech degrees,four M.Tech degrees,and an MBA program, now accommodating over 5,000 students with an approved intake of 1,074.
K.V. Vishnu Raju,Chairman of Shri Vishnu Educational Society, emphasized the institution's commitment to social transformation through education, a vision rooted in beliefs of his grandfather,B.V. Raju,a noted industrialist and philanthropist. Raju remarked, “We are trying to carry forward the legacy of my grandfather, who believed that education is the most effective instrument for social transformation.”
The elevation to university status is expected to enhance the institution's ability to introduce new academic programs in fields such as law,architecture, and journalism. Raju noted that the college has always recognized the importance of linking education with employability,ensuring students have access to career opportunities post-graduation.
To strengthen its ties with industry, the university has established regional offices in major cities including Hyderabad, Bengaluru,Chennai,and Pune. This initiative has facilitated closer collaboration with industry leaders,allowing institution to tailor its programs to meet market demands.
Looking ahead,Raju expressed ambitions for the university to evolve into a Centre of Excellence with a national presence. “We are doing very well in the State . We now aim to make this a Centre of Excellence in country. Bhimavaram should become the destination for girls aspiring to shine in their careers,” he stated.
Vishnu Women’s University is equipped with several unique facilities designed to foster innovation and practical learning. Among these are the Vishnu Space Application Centre, Radio Vishnu 90.4 community radio,an All-Terrain Vehicle track, an Assistive Technology Lab, and a Rural Women Technology Park. These resources encourage students to explore ideas beyond traditional classroom settings.
Additionally,the university has established an AR/VR laboratory to provide students with hands-on experience in immersive technologies,allowing them to work on applications involving augmented and virtual reality . Collaborations with Chennai Mathematical Institute aim to enhance the academic foundation in emerging fields, focusing on application-oriented mathematics to develop critical analytical and problem-solving skills.
Future plans include setting up dedicated skilling centers in Bengaluru and Chennai,aimed at bridging the gap between students and industry through training,certification, internships, and professional networking. The Vishnu Educational Development and Innovation Centre (VEDIC) on campus will focus on faculty development and educational innovation,while the Vishnu Student Success Centre will provide mentoring, academic assistance,and career guidance .
As it steps into this new phase, Vishnu Women’s University is poised to place a greater emphasis on emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and Data Science,alongside research,innovation, and entrepreneurship. Raju highlighted that strengthening industry and international collaborations will be pivotal in achieving these goals.
