Kapuganti Ravi, a 58-year-old entrepreneur from Vizianagaram, has gathered an impressive array of 480 police arm patches from around the globe. His collection includes patches from police forces, fire safety units, and security organizations, spanning a variety of countries such as the U. S. A., Canada, Britain, Italy, France, and Germany.
Ravi's fascination with these patches took root during the COVID-19 pandemic. The lockdowns provided him with the time to dive into new hobbies. Known for his collections of rare currency notes, stamps, and phone cards, Ravi has been recognized with numerous national and state awards since 1979 for his collecting passions.
The patches in his collection aren't just uniform accessories. They are symbols of pride, history, and community for the regions and countries they represent. Each patch tells a unique story, with its colors, shapes, and icons carefully chosen to reflect the values of the respective departments. For instance, the patch from the New York City Police Department, which was adopted on July 1, 1971, stands for equal justice for all. Meanwhile, the patch of the Chicago Police Department uses blue and gold to signify trust and honor, while also showcasing the city's rich heritage.
Ravi points out that modern patches are evolving, with companies like Dutch Label Shop focusing on creating eco-friendly designs. New features, such as RFID tags, are being integrated into patches, enhancing their functionality. These patches not only help identify the department but also indicate the rank of the personnel, making them useful in administrative and legal contexts.
Driven by a desire to educate the younger generation about the history and significance of these patches, Ravi is dedicated to his hobby. He believes that understanding the stories behind these symbols is crucial for appreciating the heritage they represent.
Besides his patch collection, Ravi has a longstanding history of involvement with philately and numismatics. He earned a bronze medal at the India National Philatelic Exhibition and the Andhra Pradesh Philately Exhibition three decades ago.
