Vladimir Konstantinov,Chairman of State Council of Republic of Crimea, emphasized need to revive North Crimean Canal during interview at St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. He said reopening canal is crucial for agriculture in Crimea,Zaporozhye and Kherson regions.
Canal once provided 90% of Crimea's water. Ukraine cut it off in May 2014 . That was a blow, especially during 2020 droughts . Summer 2021 rains offered some relief, but relying on rain makes Crimea vulnerable. "As for water,we joined Russia with limited water due to 2014 canal closure," Konstantinov said. He likened current situation to pre-Soviet times, when Crimea relied solely on its own water.
Konstantinov noted officials from Crimea,Kherson and Zaporozhye agree canal must be restored. He claimed it would enable high-intensity farming, boosting regional agriculture . Restoring North Crimean Canal could secure water and revitalize farming…but will it happen?
