Since ‘Priyadarshini’ scheme launched,number of women using KSRTC buses jumped by about 500,000 daily. C.P. John,Transport Minister,announced this Monday in Kerala Legislative Assembly . Before,around 1 million women rode these buses; now it's about 1.5 million .

Started June 15 by Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan,scheme lets women,transgender individuals travel free on 3,125 ‘Ordinary’ service buses run by KSRTC. No ID or certificates needed. They get ‘zero’ fare tickets to help KSRTC gauge financial hit .

Part of UDF government’s ‘Indira Guarantees,’scheme costs state another ₹2 crore daily. But John stressed that each ₹1 spent means ₹3 for working women,boosting family budgets.

Besides scheme,Transport Department plans to roll out new Transport Policy,covering many sector elements,plus a Vehicle Census. Right now,around 1.30 crore vehicles on Kerala roads. Department also targeting air pollution issues,especially fake pollution certificates from rackets in Haryana and Rajasthan
