Zojila Tunnel in India hits big moment June 9. Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari will oversee final blasting from Kargil side. This 13.14-kilometer tunnel cuts through the tough Himalayas at 11,578 feet, linking Kashmir valley to Kargil in Ladakh.
Once done, tunnel will change logistics for security forces, allowing year-round transport to high-altitude bases in Ladakh, even in harsh winters. Supplies used to be stockpiled in autumn to last troops along Line of Actual Control (LAC) through winter. Tunnel bypasses Zojila Pass, often blocked by landslides and snow.
A spokesperson from Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Ltd (MEIL), building since 2020,called this breakthrough “a defining moment.” They say it shows successful execution of one of India’s toughest transport projects in challenging Himalayas. Digging world's longest single-tube bi-directional road tunnel at this altitude is an engineering marvel .
With budget over ₹6,800 crore,Zojila Tunnel's horseshoe-shaped,two-lane design will cut travel between Ganderbal in Kashmir and Kargil from three hours to 20 minutes. Project aims to boost mobility, economic integration, and strategic resilience in region .
But construction faced tough hurdles, especially extreme weather with temps diving to minus 20-30°C for nearly 100 days year. Five major avalanches hit site in last five years, damaging gear, risking lives . Two workers tragically died; on January 15,2023, 172 workers rescued from an avalanche.
To tackle volatile geology, engineers used New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM),fitting for fragile Himalayan terrain. Method includes sequential excavation, immediate support like shotcrete, rock bolting, and constant geotechnical monitoring, allowing flexibility to shifting ground.
Zojila Tunnel also has four culverts, four Nilgrar tunnels, eight cut-and-cover passes, and a 220-meter vertical ventilation shaft . West Portal at Baltal, East Portal at Meenamarg. A step forward in India's infrastructure game…but what's next?
