Abhishek Banerjee, national general secretary of Trinamool Congress, wants 20 Lok Sabha MPs disqualified. They recently announced a merger with Nationalist Citizen Party of India (NCPI). On June 19,2026,Banerjee claimed these MPs,elected on Trinamool ticket in 2024,broke anti-defection law.
Banerjee stressed Constitution demands two-thirds of entire party to agree for merger, not just legislative assembly. “We have left it to judgment of Speaker,” he said, referring to Om Birla,Lok Sabha Speaker . Birla plans to meet rebel MPs before deciding.
Party filed Supreme Court judgments on Tenth Schedule to back disqualification plea. Banerjee slammed rebel MPs for trying to form separate faction, stating,“They want one of them as Lok Sabha leader of NCPI, Chief Whip and so on. This isn’t possible. They have to be disqualified.”
Banerjee accused MPs of betraying public's mandate, disrespecting Constitution. He questioned their integrity, suggesting if they truly had issues with Trinamool Congress, they should quit . “If you have political integrity, let there be an election,” he urged, suggesting they contest on BJP or NCPI ticket instead.
During his remarks,Banerjee mentioned external pressure on MPs surfaced. He claimed some fear investigations by Enforcement Directorate (ED) or Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI),others lured by money or threats. “I have concrete proof about this,” he asserted, daring dissenting MPs to sue him if they disagree.
Banerjee shared his own troubles with law enforcement, revealing multiple CID summons, two raids on his home in past month and a half. Meanwhile,he noted rebel MPs got beefed-up security from government he called one that “runs bulldozers on people.”
