Recent U.S.-Iran diplomatic maneuvering has sparked mixed reactions . President Donald Trump took to social media, declaring the new memorandum of understanding (MOU) a clear defeat for Iran. This came after U.S. Vice President JD Vance canceled a trip to Switzerland, where discussions on issues covered by the MOU were to begin.
Originally, the MOU aimed to end hostilities from the U.S.-Israeli conflict starting in late February. But Vance's canceled trip throws its future into doubt. Israel's military actions in Lebanon escalate, risking any diplomatic progress .
On Truth Social,Trump dismissed concerns from Democrats and Republicans who argue the MOU only addresses conflict symptoms. He touted agreements like reopening Strait of Hormuz, lifting U.S. naval restrictions on Iranian ports, and ending hostilities in places like Lebanon.
“The War has diminished Iran!”
Trump claimed U.S. military actions have weakened Iran's naval and air forces. He challenged critics, asking,“How stupid can some people be???”
He also stated that Iran's negotiation willingness stemmed from "desperation," asserting “They are FINISHED!” He noted next two months crucial for Iran’s nuclear ambitions, Strait of Hormuz governance, release of frozen Iranian assets, and a $300 billion reconstruction initiative .
Trump's assertion of Iran's surrender fits his broader conflict narrative. In an Axios News interview, he suggested Iran's MOU acceptance might be seen as surrender. Confident in his leadership,he claimed “no limits” to his authority .
Senator Tom Cotton criticized lifting sanctions on Iran’s oil industry, calling it a “misstep.” Senator Roger Wicker expressed concerns about proposed reconstruction fund and halting Lebanon fighting, arguing taxpayer money shouldn't fund $300 billion plan.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei blamed U.S. for Lebanon violence, with Israeli strikes hitting over 150 targets . Meanwhile,a U.S. official and sources from Hezbollah and Israel said a new Lebanon ceasefire agreement reached.
Vance's recent criticism of Israel, warning against actions risking U.S. support, marks rare discord between the nations . Trump called his relationship with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu "good," while noting the need to keep Netanyahu "a little bit sane."
