Maharashtra's new agricultural debt relief plan, called "historic" by observers, has PMK president Anbumani blasting Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay . On Wednesday,Dr . Anbumani questioned why Tamil Nadu's farm loan waiver pales compared to Maharashtra's relief .
Maharashtra's cabinet approved a massive debt write-off nearing thirty-six thousand six hundred crore rupees. This scheme offers relief up to two lakh rupees on crop loans, with no distinctions based on farm size. Over five and half million farmers in state will benefit .
Under Maharashtra's program, borrowers of two lakh rupees have entire loan waived. Those with three lakh rupee loans face repaying just one lakh, with a generous timeframe. Sharp contrast to Tamil Nadu's provisions.
Mr. Vijay's waiver totals just over two thousand crore rupees. Dr. Anbumani noted scheme's stringent conditions. Tamil Nadu farmers with up to 2.5 acres get a maximum waiver of fifty thousand rupees.
Small farmers on up to five acres receive between five thousand and twenty-five thousand rupees in relief. Large farmers get a mere five thousand rupees reduction. Maharashtra's scheme covers loans from April 2019 through March 2025.
Such timeline aims to ease financial strain on debt-trapped farmers. Tamil Nadu's relief spans only loans from May 1 of last year to February of this year .
Dr. Anbumani dismissed state projections that 1.422 million would benefit. He argued only a few thousand might actually get full loan waivers.
PMK president also hit Chief Minister Vijay for failing to deliver a key 2026 election promise . Mr. Vijay had pledged full waivers for farmers with up to five acres and fifty percent for larger holdings.
Dr . Anbumani also rejected state claims blaming NABARD rules for limited waiver scope. He stated these regulations don't prohibit full crop loan waivers…
