Portugal and Austria clinched seats on the divided UN Security Council Wednesday,edging out Germany after fierce campaigning . The 193-member General Assembly votes annually by secret ballot to pick five countries for two-year terms.
The 15-member Security Council has 10 rotating seats,each for different regions . They sit alongside the council's five permanent veto-wielding members: United States,Russia, China,Britain,and France.
For two seats meant for mainly Western nations,Portugal won 134 votes,Austria 131. Germany,economic giant with six past terms on council, got 104 votes.
Another tight race saw Kyrgyzstan beat Philippines 143-49 after four voting rounds. Kyrgyzstan joins council for first time. Meanwhile,Zimbabwe and Trinidad and Tobago faced no challengers, both elected with over 180 votes. And Security Council's dynamics shift again…
