Gadde Ramamohan, a member of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly and an alumnus of Department of Microbiology at Gulbarga University,emphasized the critical role of microbiology and technology in promoting sustainable development and ensuring human safety during a recent event. Speaking at the golden jubilee celebrations of the department,Ramamohan called for ongoing research across various fields, including agriculture,environment,medicine,and pharmaceuticals,to foster a healthier future.
The celebrations coincided with a two-day national conference titled “Microbial Horizons: Technology for a Better Tomorrow,” held at university's Pasteur Hall. This event was organized collaboratively by the Department of Microbiology and its alumni association. Ramamohan pointed out that the significance of microbiology has become increasingly apparent in light of challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic,which tested global health systems.
He stressed the importance of awareness regarding infections, disease prevention,and advancements in vaccines and treatment methods. “As technology continues to advance, new challenges are also emerging before medical science,” he remarked, urging students to engage with the latest trends and innovations in microbiology and technology.
Shashikant S. Udikeri, Vice-Chancellor of Gulbarga University and the chief guest at the event,noted that the golden jubilee celebrations and the conference successfully united educators, students, and alumni. He reflected on the department's academic growth over the past fifty years, highlighting its ability to attract students to teaching and research while producing skilled professionals .
Udikeri remarked,“New technologies are playing an important role in ensuring human safety, improving treatment methods, controlling viruses,and supporting progress in agriculture and industry.” He also acknowledged the increasing public awareness surrounding health, nutrition, and organic products,which has contributed to better infection prevention practices.
Dayanand Agsar,a former Vice-Chancellor of Gulbarga University, emphasized the urgent need to prioritize the protection of human life in contemporary society. He pointed out that modern lifestyles expose individuals to various harmful bacteria and viruses, underscoring importance of recognizing contributions of microbiologists at all levels .
Agsar paid tribute to the professors who have significantly contributed to the growth of the Department of Microbiology. Meanwhile,M.B. Sulochana, the head of the department and conference coordinator,expressed that the celebrations and conference would inspire students, promote innovative research ideas, and enhance understanding of emerging technologies. She highlighted that expert lectures at the conference would be particularly beneficial for postgraduate students and young researchers.
Earlier, Chandrakant Kelmani,secretary of the alumni association, outlined the department's achievements over the past five decades. He noted that the department has reached numerous milestones in academics and research,with alumni excelling as educators, researchers, industrialists,and scientists both in India and abroad. Kelmani described the department as one of South India’s prestigious institutions, recognized for its quality research and significant publications.
Among the guests of honor were retired professor Vijaykumar Savalagi from the University of Agricultural Sciences,Anuradha Gadde,Registrar Ramesh Landankar, Syndicate member Peerjade Faheemuddin,and K. Lingappa, president of the alumni association. The dignitaries also unveiled a souvenir commemorating conference .
