Ernakulam reports over 1 lakh self-enumeration responses for Census 2027

Key Takeaways

  • Over 104,000 individuals in Ernakulam have completed self-enumeration for the 2027 Census as of June 26, 2026.
  • Malappuram and Thiruvananthapuram lagged behind Ernakulam with only 48,457 and 46,706 respondents, respectively.
  • Officials aimed for at least half of Ernakulam's 10 lakh buildings to participate in self-enumeration, but turnout has disappointed.
  • Families completing the online process receive an 11-digit self-enumeration ID, simplifying the subsequent field visit for enumerators.
  • The door-to-door enumeration phase starts on July 1, 2026, following the self-enumeration phase that began on June 16, 2026.

In Ernakulam, more than 104,000 people finished self-enumeration for Houselisting and House Census,an early step of 2027 Census. By 5 p.m. June 26,2026, district led state participation — far ahead of Malappuram's 48,457 and Thiruvananthapuram's 46,706.

But despite crossing one-lakh mark, officials aren't happy with turnout. Just four days left until June 30 deadline, response falls short. Authorities hoped at least half of Ernakulam's 10 lakh buildings would join self-enumeration.

A senior district official said, “More self-enumerations would ease door-to-door phase starting July 1. Seems message about self-enumeration's importance hasn't hit home as planned.”

As deadline nears, officials ramp up efforts to boost numbers . They're working with residents’ associations, local reps to urge households to finish online process. Campaigns through government departments, social media, digital platforms, including Kochi Metro and Water Metro, will intensify this weekend .

Self-enumeration started June 16, letting households submit info online before field survey. This method eases enumerators' workload a lot . Families completing online get a unique 11-digit ID,simplifying field visits. With ID,enumerators ask just four extra questions. Without it,full survey of 33 questions needed — much more time-consuming.

Houselisting and Housing Census leads to population enumeration phase, making self-enumeration success vital for smooth process. But will they hit the numbers?
