Bihar Museum recently spotlighted Patna Kalam,an art style from 18th-century India. Exhibition and workshop ran December 2025 to February 2026,part of Bihar Museum Biennale 2025.
Historically,Patna Kalam was vital visual record before photography, telling tales of everyday life. Artists focused on lives of ordinary people — street vendors, blacksmiths, household staff.
Visually, style features watercolor illustrations, often on imported paper, showing specific activities. Think men in traditional dress making alcohol,or women performing in royal chambers.
Art teacher Dinesh Kumar notes Patna Kalam avoids elaborate decoration and intricate lighting. Gouache on mica often used too . Exhibition shows growing interest in this enduring art form...but how far will it go?
