A tragic incident in Brazil has resulted in the death of a 21-year-old woman after instructors failed to secure a safety rope before her jump from abandoned bridge . The accident occurred on Saturday at the Ponte do Esqueleto, located between Limeira and Cordeirópolis in São Paulo state.
Emergency services pronounced Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas dead at the scene after she fell approximately 40 meters (130 feet). Video footage that circulated widely on social media showed her being held by two instructors as they prepared her for jump, while a third instructor was positioned behind her. As she was released,an onlooker shouted for the instructors to attach her safety cord, but it was too late.
In the wake of incident, authorities have arrested the three men involved, who are now under investigation for potential homicide with eventual intent. This charge applies when an individual does not directly intend to kill but engages in actions that carry a significant risk of causing death . Local news outlet Globo reported on the ongoing investigation.
The bridge, known colloquially as "Skeleton Bridge," has been abandoned for years and is under jurisdiction of federal government. Following the incident,Brazil's Secretariat of Federal Assets (SPU) expressed its willingness to cooperate with the investigation. Meanwhile, the City Hall of Limeira announced plans to sue the federal government, citing inadequate management of bridge. They stated that the death of Rodrigues de Freitas made the ongoing neglect of site "unsustainable and unacceptable."
Local officials indicated that the instructors were affiliated with a private company offering rope-jumping activities, although some reports suggest they may have been part of informal groups. The distinction raises questions about regulation and oversight of extreme sports in the region .
Rope-jumping, distinct from bungee jumping, utilizes low-stretch climbing ropes that convert a fall into a horizontal swing, contrasting with vertical bounce of bungee cords. tragic event has sparked discussions about safety protocols and the responsibilities of operators in extreme sports.
Rodrigues de Freitas was laid to rest the day after accident, leaving behind a community in mourning and raising concerns about the safety measures in place for such high-risk activities.
