Centre announces UGC-NET June 2026 retest for three subjects in September

Key Takeaways

  • UGC-NET June 2026 exam to be retested in September
  • Allegations of errors and potential question paper leak raised
  • NTA aims to restore confidence in examination integrity
  • Student protests demand accountability and review of NTA operations

The Centre announced on Wednesday that a retest for the UGC-NET June 2026 examination will take place in September, following allegations of errors and a potential leak in the original questionnaires. Delhi High Court was informed by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta that the English and Commerce papers are scheduled for September 9, while the Sociology paper will be held on September 10.

This decision comes after a candidate, Aman Singh Yadav, who sat for the Sociology exam on June 30, filed a plea seeking to halt the declaration of results. He argued that there were significant errors in exam and raised concerns about a possible leak of question paper. Justice Jasmeet Singh of Delhi High Court acknowledged the Solicitor General's statement, declaring that petition was no longer relevant since the authorities had opted to conduct a retest .

During hearing, Yadav's legal representation emphasized the need for an independent investigation into the allegations of a paper leak . The candidate claimed he had previously submitted a representation to National Testing Agency (NTA) regarding these issues but had not received any response. His plea also called for a thorough investigation by either the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or a Special Investigation Team (SIT) into the alleged irregularities.

The NTA, which oversees the UGC-NET exams, conducted the June 2026 assessments from June 22 to June 30 across 87 subjects . These exams are crucial for candidates seeking the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), eligibility for assistant professorships, and admission into PhD programs. However, the agency has faced mounting criticism over its handling of the examination process.

In response to the complaints regarding the June 2026 exam, the NTA formed a committee to investigate the reported errors in the question papers. situation has prompted student organizations to stage protests, demanding the scrapping of the NTA and calling for accountability in the examination process. The agency's reputation has taken a hit, leading to calls for a comprehensive review of its operations.

With the retest now confirmed, the NTA aims to address the concerns raised by candidates and restore confidence in the examination system. The outcome of the September exams will be closely monitored, as the agency seeks to rectify issues that have marred integrity of the UGC-NET assessments.
