Chennai braces for major weather shift with heavy rain expected across Tamil Nadu in coming days. India Meteorological Department (IMD) warns of thunderstorms,gusty winds and predicts light to moderate showers in Chennai.
A trough from Maharashtra to north Kerala stays active,while an upper-air cyclonic circulation lingers over north Bay of Bengal and southern Bangladesh. This could form a new low-pressure area in northwest Bay of Bengal around July 3.
From July 1 to July 2,north Tamil Nadu,Puducherry and Karaikal may see moderate rain,thunderstorms and winds at 40-50 km/h. Southern Tamil Nadu likely to get light to moderate rain with isolated storms .
July 3 could bring heavy rain to hill districts Coimbatore,Nilgiris,and Theni. Rest of Tamil Nadu,Puducherry,and Karaikal may get light to moderate rain,thunderstorms.
In Chennai,forecast shows partly cloudy skies. Light rain,storms possibly hitting some areas by evening or night. Max temperature around 38–39 degrees Celsius,minimum between 28 and 29 degrees.
Warnings for strong winds issued for coastal,offshore regions. Between July 1 and July 2,wind speeds of 40-50 km/h,with gusts up to 60 km/h,expected along Tamil Nadu coast,Gulf of Mannar,Comorin Sea. Same likely on southern Tamil Nadu coast July 3 and 4.
Over Bay of Bengal,winds may hit 45-55 km/h,gusts up to 65 km/h in parts of southwest Bay on July 1 . Strong winds expected in southeast,central Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea .
In Arabian Sea,gusty winds of 40-50 km/h,with gusts up to 60 km/h,forecast along Kerala,Karnataka coasts,Lakshadweep,east-central Arabian Sea July 1 to 2. Fishermen advised to avoid these waters till it calms down.
