Chih-Ying Su,distinguished neurobiologist and former taekwondo captain, has moved from faculty vice-chair at University of California San Diego to senior investigator at Shenzhen Academy of Medical Sciences (SMART) in China . SMART announced the move July 2.
Professor Su dives deep into olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs),key to how organisms process scent. Her work's been spotlighted in top journals like Nature,Neuron,Nature Communications, and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). Joining SMART was driven by admiration for its cutting-edge facilities and vibrant academic scene.
In an email, Su shared her excitement, saying,“I decided to join SMART at the end of last year, deeply impressed by the advanced hardware conditions and the strong academic atmosphere of the research institute.” She also cited compelling leadership and vision of SMART's president,Yan Ning,as a big factor in her choice.
Su’s lab plans training and job opportunities for researchers into sensory signaling. Using fruit flies and mosquitoes is a win — they reproduce quickly, are cheap to breed, and share genes with humans. This research could unlock more about olfactory processing and its impact on human health…
