Cybersecurity experts in Hong Kong are pushing for fines on companies facing data breaches. This after a serious incident involving personal data of over 1 million people linked to Shun Hing Group, a major appliance distributor. The data was maliciously encrypted.
The Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data said Thursday it started probing breach,which impacts about 1.05 million people. More than 920,000 customers had personal details like names,addresses,email addresses exposed.
David Ip,founding chairman of the Hong Kong China Network Security Association,said,“Safeguarding consumer privacy is fundamental to keeping public’s trust.” He slammed the breach as unacceptable,highlighting major data management weakness. Ip urged big corporations handling large consumer records to tighten security beyond normal protocols.
