Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Wednesday (May 27, 2026) underscored the state government's commitment to "the river linking project," calling it a vital boon for regions like Marathwada and other drought-affected areas. The declaration followed a review of 51,000 schemes under the Jal Jeevan Mission, conducted as monsoon season approaches amid a forecast of low rainfall.
The river linking initiative aims to significantly increase the irrigation area across Maharashtra, working towards a drought-free state. This experimental water-diversion project transfers water from river basins in the western part of the state to the Godavari basin in Marathwada through interconnected river systems.
In 2024, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced the ₹88,000 crore Venganga-Penganga river-linking project. This specific endeavor seeks to irrigate 10 lakh acres of farmland, forming a key component of the broader water management strategy.
A meeting held in New Delhi on Wednesday (May 27, 2026) focused on the Jal Jeevan Mission and prevailing water scarcity. Union Minister for Jal Shakti C. R. Patil chaired the session at Antyodaya Bhavan, CGO Complex, with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, MP Sunetra Pawar, and state ministers in attendance. The review was particularly pertinent given the IMD's prediction of reduced rainfall due to the El Niño effect.
Shinde reported that the state had reviewed all schemes, noting many were nearing completion while others required technical adjustments. Discussions also covered strategies to address issues stemming from drying water sources in certain areas. He highlighted that several alternatives were explored to eliminate scheme loopholes. Departments received instructions to expedite work through necessary improvements.
During the meeting, officials discussed expanding the 'Jaltara' initiative, which focuses on water conservation. A memorandum of understanding for this program has been signed with Sri Sri Ravi Shankar's organization, and work is currently underway under the guidance of Dr. Purushottam.
