In a tragic incident early Tuesday,at least eight labourers lost their lives when their pickup truck collided with a dumper truck in Bhind district,Madhya Pradesh . The accident occurred around 1 a.m. near Chhimka village along the Bhind-Gwalior National Highway,according to local police.
The labourers were returning to their homes in Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh,after completing paddy transplantation work in Gwalior. Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver of the pickup lost control while attempting to avoid cattle on the highway,leading to head-on collision with the dumper.
Gohad Chauraha police station in-charge Ramnaresh Yadav reported that the impact was severe,causing significant damage to the pickup and trapping several individuals inside. Five of the deceased died at the scene, while three others succumbed to their injuries en route to the hospital . A total of 32 individuals sustained injuries in the crash .
Emergency responders arrived promptly after receiving alerts about the accident. With assistance from local residents,they worked to rescue trapped workers. All injured parties were transported to a hospital in Gohad for initial treatment, with those in critical condition referred to facilities in Gwalior.
Kheri Superintendent of Police Khyati Garg confirmed the fatalities and expressed her condolences. She identified six of the deceased as Updesh, Amar Singh,Sukhdev, Rajneesh,all from Bela Tursiya village, aged between 30 and 45 years. Additionally, Subhash, 30, from Harna Neoli village, and Guddu,45,from Kishanpur Ajit village,were also among the victims . The identities of two other deceased individuals remain unknown.
Family members of the victims have begun arriving at the accident site, as the community grapples with loss. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his sorrow over the incident and announced a financial aid package of ₹2 lakh for the families of each deceased labourer .
In a statement posted on X, Adityanath described the loss of life as “deeply distressing and heart-wrenching,” extending his condolences to the bereaved families. He instructed officials to collaborate with the Madhya Pradesh government to ensure that the remains of the deceased are returned to their home districts and that the injured receive appropriate medical care .
“Instructions have been issued to provide financial assistance of ₹2 lakh to the family of each deceased person from Uttar Pradesh,” he added. accident has raised concerns about road safety and conditions faced by labourers traveling long distances for work.
