A new fertilizer depot is set to be constructed near the Vegetable and Fruit Promotion Council Keralam (VFPCK) agricultural market in Kalayanad, Kollam. The initiative aims to support local farmers and was announced by Punalur municipal chairperson M.A. Rajagopal during the annual general body meeting of the Farmers’ Association.
Since its launch in 2017, Kalayanad market has emerged as a key agricultural trading hub in the region,boasting impressive annual turnover of ₹1.13 crore. It serves hundreds of farmers from Punalur and surrounding panchayats, providing them with a platform to sell their produce. market not only enhances farmers' incomes but also ensures that local consumers have reliable access to fresh, chemical-free food.
During the meeting, farmers voiced concerns about need for improvements to the existing market infrastructure. In response,Rajagopal committed to funding the construction of the new fertilizer depot and a modern public toilet facility within the current financial year. This pledge reflects municipality's dedication to enhancing the agricultural environment and addressing needs of local farmers.
The meeting was chaired by S. Saleem,president of the Farmers’ Association, who emphasized the importance of these developments for agricultural community. As region continues to grow, the establishment of the depot is expected to further empower local farmers and strengthen the market's role in the area.
