Telangana could see big boost from Central government, with around ₹3,375 crore expected under Urban Challenge Fund (UCF). That number might jump to ₹3,600-₹4,000 crore if state lines up projects worth ₹13,500-₹16,000 crore. With nearly 4% of India's urban population,Telangana's push toward 50% urbanization makes infrastructure spending urgent.
In New Delhi, during a Parliamentary Standing Committee meeting on Housing and Urban Affairs, Congress MP Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy raised concerns about readiness of Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) to tap into ₹1 lakh crore UCF. He mentioned state already got ₹1,420 crore for Warangal, Khammam,Karimnagar projects, out of ₹5,681 crore total . Chief Minister Revanth Reddy led these initiatives.
Telangana has proposed a project pipeline for Tier-III cities worth ₹7,800 crore, with more on way. But Reddy noted many municipalities lack technical know-how to craft viable projects, access financing options, secure loans with good rates. He urged Centre to launch training programs, offer financial advice to help ULBs fully leverage UCF.
The UCF, a key Union government program, backs urban development with themes like Cities as Growth Hubs, Creative City Redevelopment, Water & Sanitation. Under its model,Centre covers up to 25% of project costs, with rest expected from municipal bonds, bank loans, public-private partnerships. How much will actually materialize...?
