Action Plan to Address Human-Wildlife Conflict
Forest department launching 100-day action plan Monday to cut human-wildlife conflict. Includes 17 measures to boost safety for communities near forests.
Plan's key parts: installation of 100 kilometers of solar-powered fencing in high-conflict zones . Department will also rush repairs on 2,000 kilometers of existing fencing. Centralized monitoring system to oversee wildlife interactions.
To boost safety further, a 100-kilometer ‘Vista Clearance’ project will clear undergrowth on forest roads for safer travel. Second phase of ‘SARPA’ snake rescue project will start too . Urban settings to see 25 satellite rapid response teams and metro units for quick action in wildlife incidents.
State government revising proposal for Central government, seeking legal changes for issues with wild boars and bonnet macaques. Panchayat-level census of wild boars planned,and licensed shooters panel to manage population. Study on wildlife carrying capacity of Kerala’s forests to be done with scientific bodies .
A special package will be developed for Wayanad,Kothamangalam,and Munnar, areas hit hard by human-wildlife conflicts . How effective will this plan be…?
