Older adults in rural India grappling with climate change challenges,says a new study by HelpAge India. Released in Bengaluru on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, report says 78% of 2,224 elderly surveyed across 20 districts in 10 states faced at least one climate-related hazard past three years.

Most common events? Heatwaves hit 45% of participants, followed by floods at 27% and droughts at 20%. Over one-third of those affected say lives were moderately to severely impacted. Older individuals living alone, widows, and those over 80 at even greater risk .

Heat stress a major worry. Nearly 60% said homes not safe during extreme heat. While 90% stayed indoors, 74% fell ill, 44% saw existing health conditions worsen. One-third found healthcare access tougher during these times .

Study also reveals economic struggles faced by elderly. Nearly half reported long-term impairments, mainly mobility (32%) and vision (24%). More than half (52%) can't afford essential meds. Government healthcare facilities remain primary go-to .

Family support crucial for older adults. About 73% live with children or relatives,94% of those needing care get help from family. Sons,spouses, daughters-in-law primary caregivers. But migration for work strains support systems, with 18% saying family member left for job,mostly sons. Among those alone, 38% rely on neighbors, 16% receive no support.

Community support weak; only one-third say assistance consistently available when needed. A quarter say support rarely or never there. Economic insecurity also widespread. Percentage without work or income jumps from 11% in 60-69 age group to 21% for those over 80.

Despite knowing about welfare programs like Public Distribution System and subsidized healthcare, barriers like poor health, lack of education, digital access block benefits. HelpAge India's CEO, Rohit Prasad,says older persons largely ignored in climate adaptation,disaster response efforts,despite vulnerability.
