Hyderabad Police seized more than 2,100 vehicles in a late-night crackdown targeting tampered number plates. Operation Kavach,as it's called, ran Thursday night from 10 p.m. to midnight citywide.
Goal: tackle the rising trend of altering or hiding vehicle registration numbers. Offenders use this trick to dodge detection. Innocent drivers sometimes get stuck with wrong e-challans or dragged into criminal probes.
During sweep,authorities checked 12,098 vehicles — 8,802 two-wheelers, 1,693 four-wheelers, 1,623 autorickshaws. Police found 1,406 had altered plates, 1,132 had none,and 69 used fakes. Total haul: 2,149 vehicles — 2,046 two-wheelers,52 four-wheelers, 51 autorickshaws.
Hyderabad City Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar led the charge,visiting checkpoints in Jubilee Hills,Madhuranagar, Borabanda, Sanathnagar,Ameerpet. He spoke with drivers and told officers to crack down hard on rule breakers.
Rajendranagar Zone topped inspections at 2,376 vehicles,followed by Secunderabad Zone at 2,230 and Charminar Zone at 2,171 . Golconda Zone seized most: 530 vehicles. Charminar Zone close behind with 444.
To media,Commissioner Sajjanar stressed tampering with plates is no longer just traffic offense. Motorists altering, hiding,or faking numbers could face criminal charges for cheating, forgery.
Offenders often bend plates, erase characters,or use fake numbers to mask their identity when committing crimes . These actions complicate probes and lead to false e-challans for innocent owners .
Commissioner urged all drivers to ensure plates meet Transport department standards and keep documents handy. Current phase of Operation Kavach mainly targeted two-wheelers, but plans are afoot to expand crackdown to other vehicles soon…
