Southwest monsoon's hit a wall over southern Maharashtra . India now faces 41% rainfall deficit from June 4 to June 18. During this time,only 42.6 mm of rain fell,far short of usual 72.2 mm.
IMD blames dry spell on "absence of large-scale weather conditions" needed to push monsoon further into Maharashtra. Even though monsoon officially arrived,heavy rains skipped southern districts . But IMD still predicts heavy rain for sub-Himalayan West Bengal this week.
June rain deficits happen. Yet this year raises alarms,as global forecasts warn of a ‘Super El Niño’ year,which might mess with weather more. Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre notes 35% less rain for June. South interior Karnataka saw 44 mm instead of normal 48 mm,a 6% drop. North interior got 53 mm,below the normal 63 mm,marking 16% shortfall.
