Veteran film director and actor K. Bhagyaraj passed away on Saturday due to heart attack, leaving behind a legacy in cinema that spanned decades. Known for his versatility, Bhagyaraj also ventured into politics but struggled to make a significant impact in that arena.
Bhagyaraj, who was closely associated with the AIADMK party, was regarded as “film heir” of party's founder, former Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran (MGR). His connection to MGR was deep-rooted; the late leader attended Bhagyaraj’s wedding to actress Poornima and even referred to him as his kalai ulaga vaarisu,or successor in the arts . This relationship initially provided Bhagyaraj with considerable political leverage.
In 1988, during the AIADMK's first split,Bhagyaraj aligned himself with faction led by Janaki Ramachandran. However, after the faction's disappointing performance in the January 1989 Assembly elections, he left to establish MGR Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam. His aim was to continue MGR's legacy by merging his fan clubs with those of MGR supporters. Despite this effort, the party's lack of success in subsequent Lok Sabha elections led Bhagyaraj to return to the AIADMK.
In April 2006,Bhagyaraj made another political move by joining the DMK after meeting its president, M. Karunanidhi. At that time, he expressed his belief that Jayalalithaa was the “fittest person” to lead the country. However,he later distanced himself from politics after she launched personal attacks on national leaders, stating that he believed only the DMK-led front could fulfill the aspirations of the people and advance the state.
In April 2022,Bhagyaraj stirred controversy during the launch of publication on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's welfare policies at State BJP headquarters. His comments at the event sparked backlash, prompting him to later express regret for his remarks.
Despite his foray into politics, Bhagyaraj’s enduring legacy remains rooted in his contributions to Indian cinema, where he is remembered as a multifaceted talent.
