Kerala High Court ordered Department of Health and Family Welfare to review what's available for rehabilitating those acquitted due to mental illness. This comes after Pullepady man,cleared of murder,pleaded for help. Though fit to rejoin society,he found no support services.
Department of Social Justice had earlier reported on current rehabilitation facilities for mentally ill in Kerala . State government told court about existing scheme aiding undertrial prisoners and those acquitted due to mental health issues. It helps transition from mental healthcare to psycho-social centers run by four NGOs in Thiruvananthapuram,Ernakulam,and Wayanad.
Now, 97 individuals ready for rehabilitation at government centers in Thiruvananthapuram and Thrissur. Court urged department to set a timeline for their care . And called for State Mental Health Authority and halfway homes under Mental Health Act . Places for those discharged but not ready to live alone.
Department's report showed six Ashabhavan centers holding about 380 people,each over its 50-person capacity. These centers offer vital support for those recovered but needing psycho-social aid. Court also told state to evaluate 120 registered centers to ensure they provide safe,supportive environments . Will this finally ease the burden on Ashabhavan centers…?
